How to Do the Star Effect on TikTok?

When I was a kid, my dad and I used to lie on the roof of our summer house and count shooting stars until one of us fell asleep, and the first time I pointed my phone at an ordinary evening sky and watched TikTok fill it with glittering stars and a giant planet, I felt that same quiet wonder all over again 🌠. Star effects on TikTok range from tiny twinkles around your face to entire night skies that seem to fall into your backyard, and in this guide I am going to explain how each type works, how to film them so they look believable, and one important responsibility that every creator using these effects should keep in mind.

🧠 What Is the Star Effect on TikTok?

The star effect on TikTok is any visual effect that adds stars to your video, whether that means small star shaped twinkles on shiny surfaces, a starry overlay across the frame, sparkling stars around your face, or a full augmented reality night sky with planets and comets placed into the real world through your rear camera 🔭. One of the most famous examples is the space themed planet effect, which Dexerto described as revealing a star filled sky with Jupiter spinning toward the screen, with asteroids and the Moon hovering nearby. On the subtler side, Business Insider’s roundup of favourite effects notes that Color Blast makes anything even slightly shiny glow and glitter like stars, so star effects can be either a dramatic world changing illusion or a gentle sparkle on everyday objects ✨.

💡 Why Does the Star Effect Matter?

Stars carry a sense of wonder, ambition, and dreaming big, and that emotional weight makes them perfect for content about goals, milestones, love, late night thoughts, and anything that feels a little magical 🌟. I like to describe the star effect as a window into the night sky that you can open anywhere, even in a bright kitchen at noon, which is exactly why it surprises viewers and makes them stop scrolling. Space themed effects also invite reactions, and Dexerto reported that videos using the planet effect had gathered nearly 14 million views at the time of writing, with some creators finding it impressive and others finding it slightly scary, which shows how strongly people respond to a sky that suddenly changes 😮.

🛠️ How to Do the Star Effect on TikTok

Method 1: AR Night Sky and Planet Effects 🪐

1. ➕ Open TikTok, tap the plus icon, then tap Effects.
2. 🔎 Search “stars”, “planets”, “galaxy”, or “night sky”, and preview the results.
3. 🌳 Head outside and switch to the rear camera, because a Dubawa investigation that tested a “Planets” effect found it only worked outdoors and with the rear camera.
4. 🚪 Build suspense by starting indoors or behind a curtain, then step out or open the door so the sky reveals itself on camera.
5. ⏺️ Record, add atmospheric music, and post.

Method 2: Twinkling Stars on Faces and Objects ✨

1. ✨ In the effects search, try “star”, “twinkle”, or “glitter”, or test Color Blast on anything reflective.
2. 💡 Add small light sources such as fairy lights or a lamp, since star glints need highlights to appear.
3. 🔁 Move slowly so the twinkles appear and fade naturally.

Method 3: Star Overlays After Recording ✂️

If your footage is already filmed, add a starry overlay in CapCut by tapping Effects and Video effects, as CapCut’s mobile instructions describe, then search for star, galaxy, or night sky styles and place them where you want the sky to “switch on”.

Here is the reveal structure that makes a planet video feel cinematic:

🏠 INDOORS 🚪 THE REVEAL 🌌 THE SKY

⚠️ A Note on Responsibility

Star and planet effects can look so real that some viewers believe them, and the same Dubawa fact check documented clips that used the “Planets” effect with captions claiming the world was ending, which spread confusion among people who did not know it was a visual effect. Please keep your captions honest, add a playful hint like “TikTok effect 🪐” when the illusion is very convincing, and never present these clips as real news, because trust with your audience is worth far more than a few extra views 🤝.

🎬 Examples That Reach for the Stars

A small planetarium I advised filmed a staff member opening the dome doors while a starry night sky effect filled the frame, captioning it “Tonight’s show starts at 8 🌌”, and the playful illusion sold out their weekend sessions. A university student used twinkling stars on her graduation cap as she threw it in the air, and the shimmer made a simple celebratory moment feel like a scene from a coming of age film 🎓. And on a warm night this summer, I finally took my dad back up to that same roof, filmed him looking at the sky with a gentle star overlay added later, and wrote “Some traditions never fade ⭐”, which became the most meaningful video I have ever made, even if the views were modest.

✅ Conclusion

The star effect on TikTok can be a dramatic AR night sky, a subtle twinkle on something shiny, or a dreamy overlay added in an editor, and the best results come from choosing the right camera, the right light, and a reveal that builds wonder. Use these effects with honesty and imagination, keep your captions clear when the illusion is convincing, and let your videos remind people of that childlike feeling of looking up and wondering what is out there ⭐💛.
